Jean Ure is probably thought of primarily as a writer for teenagers, but this engaging novel shows that she can produce just as satisfying a story for junior readers. Laura, newly moved to a Victorian terraced house, longs to befriend the brother and sister who play in the garden next door. Slowly she pieces together the fragments of an old tragedy and realises how she can comfort a dying old woman. Even for alert readers who will be a step or two ahead of Laura, there are surprises in store, and a warm-hearted ending.
