Drawing on her own family history in the 1850s. Judith O'Neill describes Morag McDonald's journey, with her parents and brother, from their native Skye to a new life in Australia. The plot is eventful but never rushed; the details of shipboard life are skilfully conveyed, with the tensions and friendships which develop under cramped conditions. The Australian scenery, animals and way of life are initially strange to the Highland crofters, but the end sees them adapting, and finding parallels with their own myths and traditions. A moving and informative book for thoughtful readers.
