A first-person telling by a boy of sevenish about how he made a birthday cake for his younger sister. As he works, his imagination runs riot as he fantasises about how he would run his own business if he was a famous cake maker. His efforts in reality are less spectacular and distinctly messy but highly appreciated nevertheless. Nita Sowter's naive style illustrations enliven the proceedings and it's good to see a boy working in the kitchen. Maybe others will be encouraged to try out the chocolate cake recipe at the back of the book for themselves.
